Bolstering Our New Video Game Collection

Video Game Collection

The Library of Things at Menomonee Falls Public Library is levelling up! We’re excited to share that we are expanding our video game collection! Technical Services Librarian Kayla Daspit sat down to give us a heads up about this growing collection.

“I like stories in games. I think that there one of our more underappreciated art forms.” said Kayla, speaking to their personal thoughts about gaming. They’ve been working in the Tech Services department at the Library for a year. “There’s something unique about the way that stories are told in games that isn’t the same as telling it through a film or other visual medium.”

Emerging technology has been a significant factor in libraries and the evolution of their collections. In addition to traditional programming, there’s been a huge explosion in gaming events to meet new desires coming from their communities. At Menomonee Falls Public Library alone, you’ll find tons of gaming events for every age group. In fact, did you know our Mario Party had more than 700 party-goers of all ages?

“Libraries have to keep up with the technology that’s out there and part of that is video game technology! We have to know how to work it. And if people are like ‘yes, we like this thing’, we need to understand how to work and provide for that thing.” Kayla said.

Growing the Collection

Currently, Kayla is working to acquire Nintendo Switch titles, thanks to the console’s expansive game catalog and all-ages appeal. The Switch also markets itself as a beginner friendly console, making it a popular choice for families. Long-time players can also look forward to the future, as Kayla plans to add other consoles as well.

“For kids especially, video games are great for developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. They can also help with reading comprehension and decision making. Especially if you are playing a very story-forward game where you are having dialogue with other characters,” shares Kayla.

Video games as a whole cover a variety of genres, age groups, and playstyles, so it can feel a little daunting for individuals who don’t know where to start! Kayla recommends that patrons new to games give the LoTs Nintendo Switch a try. It comes with a variety of easily accessible games for new players, and with crowd favorites for experienced gamers. “Beyond that, thinking about what kind of games you should bring into your house—Nintendo covers a lot of all-ages content, so it’s always a safe bet when working with an all-ages household. If you’re not quite sure to go from there, you can always as your local librarians!”
