What is a social story?

Social stories help teach social skills to children. Originally intended for children with autism, social stories are very effective tools for parents and educators to successfully help all children.

A social story is a simple story. It describes a particular social situation and the appropriate way to behave. A social story can teach about a certain event like going to a birthday party or teach a skill like sharing or brushing your teeth. Reading a social story with your child is a great way to prepare them for something that is going to happen, such as a trip to the Library.

Using a social story can help reduce a child’s anxiety during a new or difficult social situation.  The simple text and pictures help children of different ages understand what to expect and how to respond to different situations. Social stories clearly describe each part of an event:

  • things that might happen
  • things they might hear and see
  • how they might feel
  • appropriate behavior expectations
