The Children’s Department is a wonderful place to read, explore, and interact with other children and their caregivers! We have recently made a few changes in this area to improve the fun, functionality, and design at the Library.
Light Table
First, we’ve added a Color-Changing Light Table! Children and their caregivers can explore how light and color interact. This is a screen-free, multi-sensory experience for all ages to enjoy! To use the light table, visit the Children’s Desk and let them know you are ready to explore.
The light table is located next to the Children’s Desk, by the public gaming computers. A library worker will turn on the light table and hand you a box of manipulatives to interact with. The library worker will ask you what color you want the table (red, white, blue, or green) and if you want the colors to be solid or to fade. The manipulatives rotate weekly and include insect X-rays with color paddles, pegs with a pegboard, and other colorful building materials. When you are done, just hand the manipulatives back to the library worker and they will turn the table off.
Early Literacy Corner
We have also taken away a shelf to extend our Early Literacy Corner! This invites more children to comfortably play with their caregivers. The Early Literacy Corner is geared towards ages 0 – 5 and features trains, puzzles, and toys to foster children’s imaginations.
A new addition to the Early Literacy Corner is the kitchen! We have a brand-new wooden kitchen with a sink, stove, and fridge. It is stocked with pretend food items. Whether you are hosting a tea party or the chef at a restaurant, this is a functional space for both kids and their caregivers to explore alongside others.
Without the extra shelf, we have shifted part of our Easy Reader collection forward and to the bottom level of the existing Easy Reader shelf. Need help finding something? Ask a librarian at the reference desk!

Children’s Department Changes
The Children’s Department is also updating its look! We have new tables and chairs to refresh our colors and ensure safety. No more wheels on chairs for little kids and smaller tables so everyone can move around the space more easily.
We still have a lot of exciting updates to come throughout the year. Stop by the Children’s Department to read, play, and see our exciting changes!
