A new children’s audio collection debuts

Children’s News and Events for December 2023

There is so much for children to do at the Library in December. We have a new children’s audio collection designed for little listeners that just debuted! Additionally, all of your favorite programs are happening this month, including the return of our ridiculously popular Noon Year’s Eve Party. Plus, the Winter Reading Challenge kicks off on December 18. Read on for all the details.

Go on an audio adventure with Tonies!

several Tonie figures and a Toniebox

We are excited to introduce a new collection at Menomonee Falls Public Library. In a world where screens dominate our daily lives, finding ways to engage a child’s imagination can be a challenge. The community is increasingly looking for audio options for children other than books on CD, as car manufacturers move away from including CD players, and Playaways, which skew a bit older (middle graders love this collection). That’s where the Toniebox and its adorable figurines come into play…but what is a Toniebox?

Designed specifically for children aged 3 and older, the Toniebox is a soft, screen-free speaker. Using magnetic figurines called Tonies, toddlers and young children can navigate storytelling and music independently, opening up their world to a library of education and entertainment. And we can’t emphasize this enough, the Tonies are incredibly cute.  The figurines, loaded with songs and stories, are some of our favorite characters like Pete the Cat, Curious George, Disney princesses, and more!

The controls are designed with little listeners (and little hands) in mind, allowing kids to take control of their entertainment. They can adjust the volume, fast forward, rewind, and change stories all on their own. It’s a great companion for independent play, empowering children to explore and learn at their own pace.

Tonies instructions

To launch this new collection, we’ve added three Tonieboxes and 37 Tonies. They check out separately for 1 week and up to 3 renewals. Follow the links to place holds on the new Toniebox and Tonies today!

Winter Reading Challenge

The end of one year and the beginning of another marks a wonderful time to reflect on all that you’ve experienced and learned over the past 12 months.

Cozy up with a book and log your reading and activities all winter long! We invite you to read 1000 minutes between December 18 and February 18 and earn tickets for prize drawings along the way.

Parents, reading to your kids counts towards your own reading challenge!

Find out more about the Children’s Winter Reading Challenge, and sign up starting on Monday, December 18.
